Knowing places through flavours

In Italian, the words sapore (flavour) and sapere (to understand) share the same origin: they come from the Latin word “sapio” which means “to understand” but also “to have flavour”.

We “understand” something if we perceive its flavour, because the faculty of taste is the most intimate of the senses, the one that can only manifest itself if we ingest portions of the world through the mouth.

To understand a place and discover its soul, one of the first things to do is to turn to its food and taste it. From the scents and aromas we can immediately identify the flavours and traditions of our destination.

Nicotera is the home of the Mediterranean Diet. It was the operational base for the “pilot study” of the Mediterranean diet by the American physiologist, Ancel Keys.

The study revealed that there was the lowest level of cardiovascular disease among the inhabitants of the rural villages in southern Italy, in particular, the citizens of Nicotera in Calabria, due to the consumption of the typical local products.

Nicotera and its surrounding area has its specialties and its characteristics, paying particular attention to the seasonality and the preparation of each product, with care taken over the choice of its ingredients.

Living in Nicotera allows you to come into direct contact with farming life or the local fishermen, while indulging in a regenerating journey into nature. You will be able to explore the most authentic and traditional side of Nicotera life and find what you have caught and gathered on your table.
